Four fire departments in Rhode Island are getting federal funding to upgrade their equipment. FIRE DEPARTMENT GRANTS: PROVIDENCE, R.I.


Jack Reed said Monday that the Pawtucket Housing Authority will receive $1 million and the Providence Housing Authority will receive about $975,000 to perform risk assessments and remove or control lead-contaminated dust and soil at public housing units. The cities of Pawtucket and Providence are receiving federal grants to identify and address lead-based paint hazards in public housing. Police say the man was weaving in and out of traffic when he drove up onto the sidewalk and crashed into a pole. WPRI-TV reports the crash happened Saturday in Providence. Police in Rhode Island say a 19-year-old man died when he crashed his moped into a pole over the weekend. WPRI-TV reports that a passerby noticed it by the water early on Monday and called police. STOLEN TRUCK CRASHES: BOSTON - Police say they’re investigating after a stolen pickup truck was found by a pond in Attleboro. Bycatch poses problems for rare species of dolphins, turtles, sharks and other animals. Bycatch is the term for when fish and other animals are accidentally caught with gear that was seeking a different species. FISHING ENGINEERING: PORTLAND, Maine - A group of organizations is getting more than $2 million in grants to use engineering to try to reduce bycatch in fisheries. He had been listed in critical condition. Officials say the teen was pronounced dead at UMass Medical Center in Worcester on Sunday. Authorities in Massachusetts say a 17-year-old boy who was rescued from a pond has died. The office’s fair labor division enforces wage and hour laws. The report, “Protecting Massachusetts Workers,” was released Monday. HEALEY LABOR DAY REPORT: BOSTON - Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey has released an annual Labor Day report to describe her office’s efforts to combat wage theft and other forms of worker exploitation.

The Cape Cod Times reports Provincetown’s current charter only allows part-time residents to serve as alternates on non-regulatory boards if there are not enough registered voters. In Provincetown, part-time residents estimate they provide about 85 percent of local taxes and want to have more input.
